Terms of Service

The Musician's Map Effective: September 30, 2026 · Last updated: October 5, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and The Musician's Map ("we", "us") covering your use of The Musician's Map at themusiciansmap.com. By creating an account you accept them. Please read the section on accuracy in particular — it matters more here than the usual small print.

1. This is a beta

The Musician's Map is early software offered free of charge while we build it. Features may change, break or disappear. Data will be corrected. We may change or end the beta at any time. We are not charging for it, and in exchange you accept that it comes with no guarantees.

If we begin charging in future, we will tell you clearly in advance and you will never be billed without agreeing to it first.

2. Who may use it

You must be at least 13 years old to hold an account; a student signing up is asked their date of birth to check, and it is not kept. If you are 13 or older you accept these terms yourself. If you are under 18, you may name a parent or guardian in your profile, and a teacher or counsellor who invites you may give us a parent's address; we tell that parent or guardian about the account and invite them to follow along, and nothing is required of them for you to use it. A parent or guardian who would rather you did not use the service may ask us to pause the account, and we will act on it until they change their mind; they may also ask for it to be closed. A parent or guardian who starts a student's account from their own accepts these terms for their own account when they do. What you tell us about your age is what we rely on.

Accounts are issued by invitation during the beta. We may decline or withdraw access at our discretion.

3. Accuracy — read this one

We work hard on the accuracy of our data. Every audition requirement, repertoire list and deadline in The Musician's Map is taken from the school's own official pages, read directly and dated, and we re-check them on a schedule. We do not copy from other guides and we do not fill gaps with assumptions.

Even so, you must confirm everything that matters against the school's own website and admissions office before you rely on it. Schools change deadlines, revise requirements and move pages without notice, and there will be periods — sometimes days, sometimes longer — when our copy is behind theirs. Where we are unsure of something we say so rather than guessing, but we cannot promise that every fact is current at the moment you read it.

The Musician's Map is a planning tool. It is not admissions advice, and it does not improve or predict your chances of being admitted anywhere. Decisions about where to apply, what to prepare and when to submit are yours.

4. Your account

Keep your password safe and tell us promptly at privacy@themusiciansmap.com if you think someone else has it. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

An account belongs to one student. A student and their parent or guardian are welcome to share it — that is what it is for. What it may not do is cover more than one student. Two siblings need two accounts, and a teacher may not run their students from a single login. Sharing an account beyond the one student it belongs to is grounds for us closing it.

5. What you may not do

The data in The Musician's Map is the result of substantial work and is the reason the service exists. You may use it for your own applications, or, if you are a teacher, in advising your own students. You may not:

Printing or saving your own plan for your own use is fine, and encouraged.

6. Who owns what

We own the app, its design, and the dataset we have assembled — the selection, verification, structure and presentation of it. The underlying facts about schools belong to no one, but our compilation of them is ours, and these terms give you permission to use it rather than any ownership of it.

What you enter — your saved schools, your repertoire, your notes — stays yours. You grant us permission to store and process it so that we can show it back to you, run the service, and develop and improve it — which includes building tools of our own that analyse what you submit in order to give you better feedback and suggestions. Our privacy policy explains the limits on that. We may look at usage in aggregate to understand how the app is used, and during the beta we may look at individual accounts to diagnose problems you report, but we will not publish anything identifying you.

7. Your school is not involved — unless you invite someone in

The Musician's Map is sold to students and families directly, not to schools. Your account is not connected to your school, and we do not report your activity to teachers, counsellors or administrators. A teacher may recommend the service, and may hold an account of their own, but that does not give them access to yours.

A parent, guardian, teacher or counsellor may hold an account of their own for the purpose of inviting students and looking at the accounts those students choose to share. Inviting a student creates nothing on the student's behalf beyond the invitation: the student makes their own account, owns it, and their account is shared back to the person who invited them until the student says otherwise. Someone who invites a student is responsible for having a proper reason to hold that student's name and email address, and must not invite anyone they do not actually teach, counsel or parent.

You can choose to share your account. From your profile you can invite a teacher, a college counsellor, a parent or anyone else you name, by email. They see your plan — your saved schools, your repertoire and how ready you are on each piece — and never your grades, test scores, address or a parent's contact details. Access may be read-only or read-and-write, and the student decides which, for each person, at any time; someone who invited the student starts with both, someone the student invited starts read-only. Removing a person ends their access immediately. One exception: while a student has told us they are under 18, a parent or guardian they have named keeps read access — that depends on what the student told us, not on any verification by us. Inviting someone who works at a school does not make that school our customer or give it any access beyond the person you invited.

If you are given access to a student's account, you may use it only to help that student. Changes you make with editing access are recorded against your account. You may not copy it, pass it on, or use it for any other purpose, and the student may withdraw it at any time.

8. Advertising

There is no advertising in The Musician's Map today. If we introduce it, we will tell you before it appears, and we do not use a student's personal information to decide which advertising that student is shown. We do not sell, rent or license your personal information to a university, an advertiser or anyone else.

We may publish statistics about how the service is used as a whole, in a form that cannot identify any individual. Our privacy policy explains this in more detail.

9. Feedback

If you send us suggestions during the beta, we may use them freely and without obligation. This is not us claiming your ideas so much as making sure we can act on a suggestion without a later argument about it.

10. No warranty

The service is provided "as is". We make no promise that it will be available, uninterrupted, error-free, or that the information in it is complete or current. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied.

11. Limits on our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses arising from your use of the service — including a missed deadline, a misprepared audition, or an unsuccessful application. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to one hundred US dollars, which reflects that the service is free.

Some states do not allow certain limitations, in which case those limitations do not apply to you and the rest of this section still stands. Nothing here limits liability for fraud or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

12. Ending it

You can close your account at any time by writing to privacy@themusiciansmap.com. We may suspend or close your account if you breach these terms, if the beta ends, or if we stop offering the service. If we close your account other than for a breach, we will give you reasonable notice and a chance to export your own work.

13. Changes

We may change these terms. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, close your account.

14. Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Connecticut, and we both agree to that.
